One Book One School
We will be sending home the book "The Mouse & The Motorcycle" with each family to read together. Each family will receive ONE book and it will go home with the oldest child at the school. They will be given out at Parent Teacher Conferences but if you are unable to attend a conference time with your teacher, then the teachers will send home the books on Friday with those that weren't handed out at PTC.
Each student will be given a bookmark with the reading schedule on it so you can follow along.
If you didn't receive a bookmark or it goes misplaced, below is the reading schedule as well.
Thanks and enjoy reading TOGETHER as a FAMILY!

Parent Teacher Conferences October 2016
It is time for Parent Teacher Conferences at McKinley Elementary. They will be held Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th. Kindergarten will also have conferences on Friday, October 28th from 8 AM-3 PM. There will be no school that day for KINDERGARTEN ONLY.
To schedule a time with your student's teacher, please click on the teacher's name below and it will take you to their Parent Teacher Conference webpage where you can sign up for a conference time. It is very simple to use. You just review the slot times and when you find one that works for you, push the "Sign Up" button next to the time slot you want and it puts a check mark in the box, then you push the "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the screen and follow the directions. It should automatically come up with the "I do not have a sign up genius account" checked and leave it that way and fill in the information. MAKE SURE TO PUT PARENT'S NAME IN THE SIGN UP WHERE IT ASKS FOR NAME AND EMAIL BUT PUT YOUR STUDENT'S NAME IN THE COMMENT BOX ON THE SIGN UP PAGE THAT IS AT THE TOP WHERE IT SHOWS THE CONFERENCE TIME YOU ARE SIGNING UP FOR.
If you have any questions, please notify us.
Thank you and we look forward to meeting with you.

October LIM Family Challenge
Dear Families,
This month our school is focusing on becoming proactive. Being proactive helps us
understand that we are in charge of ourselves and our choices and actions. Talking
about your feelings and actions help you understand the consequences, whether good or
bad, that come from these actions. Changing our language can help make a paradigm
shift and see our situations in a different light.
Reactive language
The verbs we use to describe a situation are a good measure of how proactive we are.
Just have a look at the difference between the following sentences:
This activity will help our students talk about their day and the choices that were made.
We are challenging you and your family to complete the M&M activity during the month of
October. If you do the activity make sure to send a note with one of your students and we
will put you in the monthly Leader In Me Family Challenge. Prizes will include fun family
board games, coupons to local food establishments and stores. We hope that this will be
a fun way to connect with your kids!!
M&M Game Rules: (You can choose to do either the Anger Game or the Feeling Game or
if you are an overachiever you can do both. If you do both you can get 2 tickets to the
prize drawing!! Just make sure to tell us that on the note you send in.
Give each student a fun size pack of m&m’s®. If you have one large bag, give each child
10-15 of them making sure they have at least one of every color. The students will then
sort their m&m’s® according to color. Students will take turns sharing their answers for
each color. If a student has two orange m&m’s®, he or she will share two things that
make him or her angry. (This is according to my sample. Your color order can be
however you choose.) As the students share they may eat their m&m’s.

Reactive language
- There’s nothing I can do
- He makes me so mad
- That’s just the way I am
- I have to do that
- Let’s look at the alternatives
- I control my own feelings
- I can choose a different approach
- I will choose an appropriate approach
The verbs we use to describe a situation are a good measure of how proactive we are.
Just have a look at the difference between the following sentences:
- If only I had more obedient kids
- I can be more patient towards my kids
- Don’t suffer from the mistakes you made, be proactive and correct. Accept that you made a mistake and take action.
- Make promises, set goals, even if they are really small ones. It builds the feeling of integrity and awareness and feeling of self-control.

McKinley Flu Shot Clinic
Dear Parent or Guardian:
The
Bear River Health Department (BRHD) and Box Elder School District (BESD) are
partnering to help protect students and teachers against flu. To make getting a
flu shot more convenient, school nurses and BRHD staff will be offering flu
clinics at your child’s school. Clinics
will take place after school. At least
one parent or legal guardian is required to attend the clinic with their
child. Please refer to the attached
schedule for the date and time of the clinic at your child’s school. Vaccines will be available to the students,
parents and siblings if they attend with their child.
There
are only flu shots this year. Flumist is
not available in the United States this year.
Vaccine information sheets will answer questions you may have regarding
the vaccines. In order for your child to
receive a flu shot at the clinic, please
visit www.brhd.org, and fill out the consent
form and print them. Vaccine information sheets are also available. Bring the completed consent to school the day
of the clinic.
No child will be
vaccinated without a signed consent form and parent or legal guardian present.
BRHD
can bill several different insurances, please visit www.brhd.org for a current full listing.
Please
remember to bring your insurance card, or a copy the day of the clinic.
If
your insurance is NOT listed on
the website OR your insurance does not cover flu vaccine, the cost will be $25. A receipt will be given to you so you can
apply for reimbursement with your insurance company.
If
your child does not have insurance,
the cost is $15.
You
have the opportunity to pay for the vaccine with any of the following methods:
- Pay with cash or check. Make check
payable to “BRHD”
- Pay by credit or debit card the day of the clinic
If
you have further questions about flu vaccines, we encourage you to call your
doctor’s office or the BRHD at 435-792-6500.
Sincerely,
Bear
